Reb Terrible food & service!
| I have heard a lot of great things about the Cock and Magpie Inn, but have just been for a meal for my mothers birthday and we are all very disappointed. We waited half an hour to order, to be told that there are no chips (served with every dish), understandable when busy... No need when there is a supermarket on your doorstep! When the food finally arrived the steaks were tough and not cooked as ordered, the gammon and pork were dry and inedible. The tuna was destroyed due to over-cooking and the service was terrible. When speaking to the Landlady, she raised her voice, was extremely rude, aggressive and disagreed with every point we had to make! I was actually embarrassed and appalled by her performance. | ||

| Mr. Pickering must have visited the Nettle on a rare 'off day'. My wife and I take close family, including a six year old, to The Nettle regularly. Our difficulty is that we struggle to find enough superlatives between us, to describe our enjoyment of food, drink and atmosphere of this special place. The draught beer and wines we regard as libation, the food is epicurean..and anyone who crosses the threshold over the Christmas period will quickly be warmed with festive spirit and a feeling of 'bonhomie'. I would most earnestly suggest to Mr. Pickering that a return visit would be worthwhile, even if only to try the spiced plum crumble for dessert. We had some today. One of our number thought this to be 'SPICED RUM CRUMBLE', which is was not, but even without any alcoholic content it was intoxicating......from a family recipe, I believe...... and a remarkable confection...truly superb!! In adding this comment, I am fully aware that any readers of these words will rush to try some, and it may become more difficult to book a table. But it would be unfair to leave Mr. Pickering's comment as the last entry on this web site. The Nettle is part of the Sloan family, the building would be an empty husk without them, and they, and their staff are fully deserving of our patronage, our support and our thanks. | ||

| I lived for most of my life within half a mile of this pub. It was then called 'The Steelsmelters Arms' due to the 'Smelting' of steel at local steelworks. I dont know why the 'S' has been dropped over the years. Probably as a result of the lowering standards of education in ur system. | ||

Pete Pickering Extremely poor
| We were greeted in a friendly enough fashion, then completely ignored. When I enquired, 25 minutes after our booked time, what was happening, we were shown through to a nearly empty dining area, with no apology or explanation. We had been forgotten. The carvery was dismal by any standards. I don't know if someone had forgotten to put the joints in the oven, or if they were economising on gas, but the beef was running blood, and the lamb wasn't much better. The pork was encased in a huge layer of fat, a lamentable carvery trick to serve less meat, as is the small plate and large Yorkshire. All three were well in evidence. Meat is supplied by someone named, maybe they should consider their client list. Potatoes were obviously supplied by World of Leather and Solvite. Veg had the taste and texture of yesterday's leftovers. Dessert was not disastrous, but did have a tough, cardboard-like side to it. Nothing was very warm, including the plates, nobody bothered to ask if everything was ok, no sauces or condiments were offered, and the eventual complaint was simply ignored. I would say it was cliquey, except that everyone seemed to be treated with equal disdain. At £14.30 for two courses, the value is simply appalling, especially when the (very) local competition is considered. The gentleman I assumed to be the proprieter also tried to serve me at least 1/4 pint short and disappeared, thankfully the other barman rectified this. Nice cars outside, slow down to look, but definitely drive on by. | ||

Sandra M Friendly, inviting, great customer service
| I love the nettle, a quiet drink or a meal what a great place to be. We are going to take the in-laws next weekend as they are keen to try it because we have spoke of the 'special place' with great food on so many occasions. Not too far from where we live and on a hot sunny day you could be in Provence (another of our favourite places). The food was absolutely divine, yes the service was perhaps a bit slow but we were in no rush and perhaps other restuarants just rush you through, eagerly wanting your table for the next lot of customers and that is what we are used to in this fast pace of life! So if you want to relax, enjoy some good food in excellent surroundings this is the place to go. | ||

down right disappointing
| After walking out of here a few months ago having seemed to have been forgotten by waiting staff we thought we'd give it another chance. Well wish we hadn't we finally after a long wait(considering there were only about 10 other people in, including ourselves and we ordered 2 sandwiches and a salad!) two of us finally were served, we had to ask for the second sandwich sometime later as it seemed to be forgotten. I had a prawn and chorizo salad which came with two prawns which was incredibly disappointing and I had also asked to leave the onion off my salad, unfortunately the chef mustn't be able to read as it came with the onion!! We weren't asked if we would like sauces etc and never offered anymore to drink till they came to clear our plates. The staff seem to wander round like zombies with no intent of actually doing their job. Most disappointing again, don't think there'll be anymore chances for this place! | ||

| hi nat, my auntie dot worked there as a bar staff when it first opened around 1988/89 after running her own pub the old feathers for years, it's demolished now i believe though. i moved to benidorm whilst she worked at your nan's pub, she loved it there so i knew i could leave england with piece of mind. after being her own boss for all those years at the old feathers i worried she would adapt to being employee, not the boss. i doubt your nan and grandad are the people she was employed by, but the pub is the same i guess. my aunt “dot” dorothy jarvis sadly died while working there, she went home to her home on holme hall after a happy night at work, but passed away in the night. it was thanks to a concerned team of staff from the pub they went to her home and found her before she was dead too long, then they contacted me here in spain. she was so happy there in that pub, if kept her going i will one day come to visit that lovely pub, h hope i meet your nan and grandad. sue loveland(nee gallimore) benidorm, spain | ||

| I happened upon this pub whilst en route to Ashover. It looked charming from the outside. The interior did not disappoint - log fire, cosy welcoming atmosphere. Good pint of Farmer's bitter. Great ribeye steak sandwich, meat froma local butcer, bread from a local baker, Buxton cheese (all suplliers were credited on a list in the pub). Delicious food, promptly served - just £7 which was great value. The barman even came out into the carpark to tell me my meal was almost ready, as I had returned to my car to attaned to my dogs. He invited me to bring the dogs into the pub! Nice food, nice people - i do not recognise the negative nature of the earlier reviews at all. Is it the same pub? | ||

| Visited today hoping we could get a table as usually at weekends we would book as it is very popular. Not actually visited here for a while and really so astonished that what was good is now extreemly good !! Always enjoyed our meals but tonight there was a different feel. The food was more than excellent and you have to remind yourself just what you are paying !! We are very used to the Chequers up the road, but trust me this is worth the journey. If you want a similar menu for less !! than the so called buy one get one free ie the Chequers at Dronfield, venture here to the Cock and Magpie 'two for one', which they do mid-week . Our experience tonight which was steak evening with a free sweet..The food is presented so well and to be honest we have got so used to the buy one get from free meal regime this was totally ..well how it used to be..!! It was excellent The food was cooked well ,and to our liking and the service was excellent..I really feel we have lost our sense of venturing out to little pubs like this one ..who have so much to offer ,,we need to get away from the likes of what really is fast food at these so called restaurants,,I would recommend eating at the Cock and Magpie. It caters for all tastes and budgets; I forgot to mention the desert was devine. Well done to the staff and owners who I think are new since the last time we visited. I certainally will be revisiting this little piece of food heaven again. | ||

| We went to this pub today for a family lunch of 10 people. The food was not good, poor standard carvery, which would have been better with freshened up veg instaed of the lukewarm overcooked slop. The veg option was a joke, just rissotto which was unpleasant and badly cooked. So expensive, £20 for 3 inferior courses. We won't be going again ever. | ||

| Having visited the nettle on numerous occasions, i find the quaint pub delightful to visit. Both me and my partner, Darren enjoy the wine and when we do occasionally eat, we find the food served there to be of the highest quality. All of the food is fresh and seasonal and all staff are welcoming when approached. One point however, is that the males who work there have thick curly hair, and whilst lovely to look at, they could need a hairnet when working with food. Me and darren will certainly return! | ||

nicolle roberts absoloutely disgusting
| we entered the restaturant and waited to be seated as the sign told us to wait for assistance; after 10 minutes we had to ask for the management to seat us. We had only just entered the restaurant and the mood was set, rubbish. We were seated by one of the waiters that clearly had no clue on what he was doing wandering around wondering where to seat us. After ordering our drinks we waited for a further 10 minutes before suggesting to the waitress who had brought out the drink that we would like to go and fetch our meals. She then replied have you not been told that there is a 30 minute wait. We had not been told by the 'dopey' waiter of the wait. After 15 minutes of waiting during which the waitress had been trying to see if we would be able to fetch our carvery sooner to which the answer was No we are short staffed. This would have been acceptable IF there was actually anyone at the carvery itself. After being told 20 minutes later that we could get our meals be continued to the cavery to where we found the assistant manager and not a chef serving the food. We recieved our meat and where appauled to find un prepared carrots, old suede and carrot mash and hard parsnips. This meal was so bad we could not eat it and refused to pay for it altogether. Needeless to say we will never return here again. | ||

Mrs Weaver Awful - Don't attempt it!
| It is horrendous. Beautifully refurbished but the food was diabolical. We ordered, starters arrived. Garlic bread (half baquetter with chunks of garlic covered in cheap sunflower oil) Main courses arrived - 1 x sirloin steak, 2 x fish and chips. We were not brought any sauces/condiments. I sat and blatantly did not eat my food due to it being poorly cooked and smelling like it had all be deepfried. Sirloin steak looked more like a play piece of rubber out of an early learning kitchen set, the chips were doused in oil and hard, and there was a smell of charcoal on all food - and no none of us had BBQ. No one came to ask if everything was ok with my meal. After having sat there for a while, with 3 full plates of uneaten food, I asked to settle my bill. I was brought my bill for £27.00 - the full plates of food were totally ignored and payment was taken. Needless to say I will not be returning. I even took a photo of the amount of food left to show how much I was ignored - it was almost as if the waiters were too embarassed to ask me. I will be writing formal letter of complaint to the Orchid Group who I believe are the pub's owners. A total shame and embarassment. We were supposed to be having a treat out. It's a long time since we've been out for tea. I wish I had gone to Morrisons for a pizza and salad. | ||

Dave Andrews Update | ||
| Well it has been 4 weeks since we took over as holding managers and things are slowly improving on this pub which had been 'killed'. The carpeting has been deep cleaned and the place smells nice and fresh. The upholstery is being cleaned next week. The beer garden is beingmaintained as it has not seen a grass cut for 2 years and people are now starting to use it and the children can now access the play equipment. On completion in 2 weeks the beer garden will look great. By the way the beer tastes good as well. The entertqainment listed on this site is not accurate and we shall see about putting it right. Howeve the only entetainment is on Saturday evening from 10pm when we have a live vocalist. Entertainment is being reviewed with a view to mid week artists, introduction of a new quiz and possible midweek karaoke. Watch this space or call in with your ideas | ||

Karen Hextall Very poor
| My husband and I went to Nettle with one of our friends recently and the experience was bad. I ordered a Lasagne as the main course, I was stunned when it came because the portion was so dismal, it was not enough to feed a 5 years old child. I complained to the manager, what he said was that nobody had complained before about the portion and the portion was standard, he refused to do anything about it. Ironically enough, a small child sat at the next table ordered the same Lasagne, and her portion was 3 times of mine. So the manager just told me a pack of lies about the portion. It is such a disgrace that they just ignored customer's complaints and had no intention to deal with it. It was a nice pub and we were regulars but the standard had slipped recently and we will never go back to this place again. | ||

Calladine We liked it | ||
| We went for a meal about a month ago and we were extremely impressed. The descriptions of the meals were average, but on presentation they were really nice. Well cooked, well presented and extremely tasty. Our only down comment, the barmaid was a little unfriendly. We will try again and perhaps we can get a friendly barmaid too this time. | ||

Mr Winch Utterly Substandard
| Having just visited The Nettle Inn for a special meal I was thoroughly disgusted with the way my family and I were treated there. During our meal we were approached by the waiter who asked us if everything was OK. My husband told him that we were not satisfied with the meal, the food was cold, dried out and in most cases tasteless. The waiter said he would go and tell the chef, but he did not return with any feedback. When our plates were cleared by the waitress again nothing was said and she did not ask us for our sweet order in spite of the fact that we were booked in for a two course meal. For a good twenty minutes no one returned to our table and eventually we got up in disgust to leave. When I approached the bar to pay and reiterate my complaints including the fact that no one bothered to ask us if we wanted any sweets, the extremely rude waitress who had served us earlier just presented me with a bill for the course we had eaten and did not utter one word to me. Not only was there no apology but the waitress did not even have the courtesy to say thank you when I handed over the money to pay. Infact she did not say a single word to me. This kind of treatment of customers is disgraceful. Why train your staff to ask for feedback on the meal if you intend to treat any customers who have a critical comment in such a disgraceful way. I thought the point of asking for feedback was so you could monitor the quality of your service to the public, not just collect compliments. Good manners cost nothing and make the world of difference when it comes to customer service. | ||
