 Wooden Doll Pub/Restuarant
Wonderful atmosphere, superb food and service, and a view over the Tyne Estuary that's out of this world - the Wooden Doll is definitely at the top of my 'must visit again' list - highly recommended.

WOODEN DOLLER
THE DEMISE OF THE WOODEN DOLL
What a pity about the doll, the licencees had just about got it right, EXCELLENT food, especially SUNDAY Lunch, a real good selection of well kept guest ales,a staff that actually looked smart in their uniforms and unusual in these modern times actually looked as if they wanted to be there. I must totally disagree with the post of SANDRA, if bands are the saviour of the doll WHY have the last 4or more managers not got it right, with the BANDS banging away, on up to three nights a week, bringing with them the general disorder and more odour from the smoke?? they tend to attract. NO Sandra bands are not the saviour of the DOLL. Good managers Like the NEWLOVES brought this fine pub from the ABYSS it was in. IT IS though, the GREEDY thoughtless Freehold/Breweries with their EXTORTINATE rents that are the ruination of this pub. NO doubt the next short term sacrificial MANAGER will come along armed with a cheap in, cheap out deal, then once again ruin what the NEWLOVES had put into the pub. All the best to the NEWLOVES, WHO THE **** IS MELLOR??

I see the Wooden doll has been closed down! no surprise there to be honest. while the decor is nice the management decided not to continue with the Live Music, this to me is a tragic mistake and The Wooden Doll has always been known for live bands.
with regards to a previous owner (initial TM) Be warned DO NOT WORK FOR HIM/GO INTO BUSINESS WITH HIM, HE WILL I GUARANTEE IT RIP YOU OFF.

 best karaoke in town
their sunday night karaoke is the best i have ever known it includes the children for a while then its adults only justin is great. The quiz on a thursday is marvellous and is quite literally a laugh not on the serious side just a bit of light relief after a hard days work. It is working hard to please everyone and keep trouble out which they are doing very well by anyones standards. Sunday lunches are home cooked with fresh veg and on a saturday you can smell the roasts cooking making you wish you were eating there.

WOODENDOLLER

The WOODEN DOLL, has at last !!after several years of absolutely atrocious management has been taken over by BILL and CAROL (CAZ) to her friends, NEWLOVE. The pub has been given a top to toe refurb and is well and truly BACK Whilst the demize (sadly) of the Mag.bank continues in a downwards spiral the DOLL is flourishing. The new kitchen has been an inspiration to the pub as BILL and CAROL have many years in the trade and are both fine cooks, the kitchen is also complimented by the attentions of their young (Forever Smiling)daughter TRACY another fine cook.
The quality of the food is apparent by the queues of people waiting for their Sunday lunch as all good pub scranners like their sunday lunchtime treat.
BILL and CAROL being very experienced in good pub management skills take no prisoners if you step out of line and has developed a good, safe family orientated atmosphere.
BILL is an avid quizzie and runs a general knowledge quiz on Wednesdays 2100hrs and the specialist music quiz on Fridays 2130hrs. With good prizes on offer both days.
The doll is starting to put on good quality local music and the last visit I had, LIAM FENDER the excellent local singer songwriter was appearing and as usual his talent was obvious and from the heart. Carol and Tracy are well known for their SPECIAL song nights when all are welcome, if you can prise the mic from them!!
The new cellar is an obvious bonus as is the standard of real ales that have arrived with it, the selection of house and many fine guest ales is proof that the doll is BACK. The staff are very young eager to please and in the main very very smart (New Uniforms) and are in my opinion an asset in themselves.with their socialising skills coming to the fore.
I have no hesitation in making recommendation to the doll and that I will be back hopefully in the very near future for that special sunday scran with my pal and famous wordsmith Bob Peel.

 Getting there ...
It's taken a while, but the Doll is better than it has been at this time of year for a long while. Great selections of (Southern) real ales coming up, with sensible strengths -- summer beers in the summer what a novelty! Good food, reasonably priced too. Make sure you book on a Saturday at the moment.

Its about time Wilf was out of The Wooden Doll, its such a shame he ruined its reputation before he left!!!
what a joke, this guy couldnt run a bath!!!!!
It is a shame to see the new refurb has left no space for bands as the previous (before wilf) landlords had built up a good reputation for hosting quality bands.

management in the powder monkey at hadrian lodge.
I am very dissappointed with the very bad service at the powder monkey. I have been going there for years and have never been spoken to like that off anyone never mind a manager at my own local. I would understand if it was a new member of staff but not management I am very angry with this service and would like something done about this i am not happy with this at all.

 Real ale and real atmosphere
Hi
This is a great little pub and a real find. They serve real ale and not only that but it's in fantastic condition. All the staff are very friendly and they even do lunchtime food which is great value. Situated on Albion Road and made the Good Ber Guide for the last 3 years - well deserved!!

NON SMOKER
 NON SMOKING REAL ALER
A wonderful SMOKE FREE pub the LICENSEE can only be congratulated for declareing it so. Although being smallish the pub itself is large on character and characters. We tried 2 of the REAL ALES on offer and again I can only CONGRATULATE the LICENSEE as the ale was served absolutely to perfection in a sparklingly clean glass by an equally sparkling barmaid. The whole pub has been turned into an EXCEPTIONAL watering hole ,spotlessly clean and staffed by people who obviously want to be there, no doubt this will now become our local as the ales are obviously in the hands of a person who not only knows real ale but more to the point CARES

I WILL RETURN
FINE PRAISE FOR THE WOODEN DOLL
In response to :MINESAPINT: I assure you I have no connection whatsoever to either Management or staff at the WOODEN DOLL, I am sure that the MANAGEMENT will be DELIGHTED with your comment of another venue being JUST AS GOOD as the DOLL.that venue being the MAG BANK, fine praise indeed the MAG being a very successful PUB over many years. I will pass your comments to the DOLL management and I am sure they will be gratefully received.

 I SMELL A RAT
By reading that last comment anyone would think that came from the management or staff !! Reads like an advert !!
Just like to add a comment - there is another venue just as good for live music and food and with a wine menu and thats the Mag Bank.
Best of luck to the doll, but the place has had that many people attempting to do the Mag out of trade and copy what they do that its going to take a hell of a long time to gain a reputation like the Mag has.

I WILL RETURN
FROM BROKEN DOLL TO WOODEN DOLL
At last the doll is on its way back into the real world of PUB life and not a playground for the IMMATURE. What a transformation it actually has beers.lagers spirits and an excellent new wine list for its customers to purchase(WHAT A NOVELTY) The RE-BRANDED MEDITERRANEAN style restaurant LA-CASALINGA has been turned into a fine eatery and was absolutely chocker on the nights we visited BOOK EARLY to avoid disappointment. The new management team of WILFand his executive CHEF and business partner TOM have well and truly dragged the BROKEN DOLL back from the ABYSS and can look forward to the accolades that are already once again being heaped upon this fine PUB/RESTAURANT THE WOODEN DOLL

Mellor fan club
Non Smoking now a non starter
Started off well but now has reverted to type along with many other pubs in North Shields Town, they have now removed the non smoking ban. It won't be long until they allow any punter in who has a couple of pounds to spare on a drink. Shame as this place could have been great, food wasnt much cop but then when you don't employ chefs and just KP's what do you expect. Another Terry Mellor job. CV includes Wooden Doll, Tap & Spile, Garricks Head, Lowlights Tavern, Railway Inn none really a success.

 Great Atmosphere
Despite being a little on the Smoky side, the charm and character of the pub is great. Everyone is made very welcome by mine hosts - Arthur & Lillian.
Formerly known as the Golden Fleece, and well over 100 years old, you can enjoy some great beer and great company in one of the few true olde worlde and old fashioned traditional pubs left in the area.

Great pub we keep going back to
From the very first time I went to the SMHF I was very impressed. The building is gorgeous, the staff are friendly and the food is great. Only once have we ever had a bad meal - which in contradiction to the last review, was a Sunday Roast. The meals are a huge size, and are very decently cooked.

I wish they had a beer garden on their ample lawns.

I will return time and time again.

 y idols whitleybay
Bar manager of several nightclubs and bars across the country, Would just like to make a few comments on my night at Y-Idols or Idols as previously known.

Door Staff 5/5-High security and very well stated dress code etc

Bar Staff 4/5 Couple of them look as if they're still in school but the staff especially on the bar located on the top floor next to the doors to Beach and the young lad with dark hair on the longer bar 5/5 for service and very polite with a smile!

Interior 3/5 I adour the vibe of the nightclub itself and i get the whole look i just think a lot of the fixtures and fittings need renewed.

Prices 4/5 Larger £2 very good. I thought the Shots were a bit over priced. All else fair priced.

Facilities 1/5 I have to make a comment on the toliet. Im not sure how bad the ladies are but the gents need completly renewed. I know myself it is hard to keep on top of the fittings etc in the toliets but it can make all the difference to your customer.

Music/DJ I must say the music was interesting not what i had been told to prepare myself for. Some fantastic R&B and good Dance mixed in.

Overall 3/5 Maybe a 4/5

 IDOLS
I WAS IN IDOLS FOR A 30TH BIRTHDAY ON FRIDAY.
CHEERS TO THE DJ I THINK JOHN OR JAMES FOR PUTTING SOME GOOD OLD IDOLS SONGS ON FOR US WE HAD A FANTASTIC NIGHT.
AND I WOULD LIKE TO PAY COMPLIMENTS TO THE BLONDE GIRL WHO WAS WEARING THE BOOTS BEHIND THE SMALLER BAR. SHE IS DEFINATLY ONE OF THE NICEST BAR STAFF IVE MET IN WHITLEY BAY AND WAS HAPPY TO CHAT TO US FOR A WHILE.
ANYWAY HOPE YOUR COLD IS GETTING BETTER DARLING AND YOU DID WELL TO UNDERSTAND MY GERMAN FRIEND.
NICE TO SEE THAT IDOLS IS STILL GOT ITS OLD SCHOOL FEEL. I WILL DEFINATLY HAVE TO COME DOWN ON A SATURDAY NIGHT AS I WAS TOLD BY THE BAR GIRL ITS A LOT MORE PACKED AND I HAVENT BEEN IN SINCE BEACH AND IDOLS BECAME ONE.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TONY.

 y idols whitleybay
y-idols whitleybay.
im not that found of whitleybay for its nightlife normally although last weekend i may have been swayed slightly.

I started at the firestation and made my way down the strip and instead of my normal destination of Deep night club we decided to give good old idols a try...and what a shock!!

Really nice staff especially on the smaller bar..near to the doors. Very patient with my highly intoxicated friends. (plus the view of the lady phew....)!!!

The music was the main difference i noticed...not once did i hear 'we're having a gang bang...' or any of the old cheesy crap that they use to play. It was a lot of new dance and r&b with a few oldies just thrown in at the right time.

Loved my burger..had to mention that too.

I would say the only downfall with idols is that it still feels a bit to much like a pub rather than a night club. Maybe if they turned a few of the zillion lights off they have going on and lost the current 'tweenager' dancer and got a real woman they may fill the place.

I have to say though it was a good night though and i am going to try it again in the next month or so and i'll give more feed back if any inprovments.

Great Night, Great Place, Great People
I come up for the 3rd time to Newcastle/Whitley to watch my team (Southampton) play the Toon. We lost, but that's irrelevant. I've just got back now, and I'm full of happy memories.

Newcastle and Whitley (and I assume the the surrounding areas) have fantastic nightlife, friendly locals and many amenities.

This is epitomised by Y-Idols. The barstaff, bouncers and locals were friendly and sociable - much like alot of Newcastle aswell. I was in Y-Idols for a few drinks on Fri (17th Feb) and Sat (18th) and I did not see any trouble (unlike down South, where people go out looking for it...) - only people having a good time and living for the weekend.

I'm from the south and I would say that we are a more reserved, pretencious and in some ways, arrogant bunch and I don't like that at all. Reserved, fair enough, but arrogancy sucks.

I enjoyed my third trip to Newcastle so much I am now contemplating moving there in the next couple of years.

I'm tired as I've just got back and if I had the energy now, I'd write a longer, better constructed comment that this. I would, however, like to say the geordies are the friendliest, warmest people you could meet and are a credit to their city.

Thanks for a fantastic weekend, Newcastle and it's people.

 Busy Bar/Restaurant
This is a busy pub and has many bonuses about it, the lager and beer and cask ales are excellent and the bar staff are good if not a little unhappy. However the food is renowned in the area if you are looking for a roast but some of the more regular dishes are wise to be avoided. The potions are generous however. they do allowed children in the majority of the pub and even offer a non-smoking section or two for them. All in all a good pub which serves decent food (if a little overpriced) and good beer.

Lovely pub with atmosphere and great food
I thoroughly enjoyed this pub, well recommended. The first telephone number is incorrect - but was answered by a fine gentleman, very friendly (same as many of the North Shields folk i met that evening)

Local
 Do not go there
If a safe & quite drink is what you want, don't go in here. Definately one to keep away from. Fights inside & outside premises most nights especially weekends. Strangers enter at your own risk.

neil
 always busy
a modern pub with tvs, plenty of music, 2 sets of toilets and a pool table, not to mention a few ex convict bouncers who turn people away for fun. (unless youre a hot young female 15 ish). this pub is usually understaffed and its hard to get served. by day the food is nice but the portions have got a lot smaller so have a sandwich before you go, always busy
