 The New Deerplay Inn, Weir
Have visited this establishment on several occasions under the new owners. The food, service and ambience are very good ... The only drawback being their opening hours, which are rather hit and miss. All I would comment is if they wish to make this business a viable concern they should radically review their open days and their telephone system.

Previously a great pub with great food. Unfortunately now it seems to have fallen into the hands of simpletons incapable of making a sandwich. Ignorant staff who are incapable of taking an order STEER CLEAR!!!!

Lovely pub apart from the fact that there are cigarette stubs in the garden area at the entrance, ashtray totally full, bottles and rubbish which discourages you from going in for a meal. Cleanliness outside does not seem a priority!

Called in with my partner by chance, lamb shoulder was beautiful as was my partners salmon. The lemon sticky pudding was also great.

 Great Pub & very friendly
I have been going to the deerplay for 6 years now, the food is 5*, the service is 5* and the prices are competetive, highly recommended pub, Ive never had any problems with the landlady - I think she and all her staff are very friendly.

 Good pub grub
The Deerplay is still open I went last week. It has great food at very reasonable prices. You don't get many pubs nowadays selling great homecooked food.

 Terrible owners
Food is great, but the people who run the place are unbelievably rude. On one occasion, they switched the carpark lights off on us as we were leaving (it was only 9pm.) They close whenever they feel like it, and the place has no atmosphere. It's such a shame as this place used to be great before the current proprieters. Most locals won't frequent. Everyone keeps expecting them to leave...how they make a living there with the hours the place is open is questionable?

Like the other comments you see about the deerplay, we to have had a very bad experience there about 6 month back. firstly they do not except cards and the land lady is just plain rude. We firstly asked for a high chair to which they were all in use all 2 or something and secondly ask for a pint of tap water with ice and you get told in no un certain terms you buy a small bottle of water for over a pound or somthing. dont get me wrong we had already bought several drinks before-hand AVOID! we now do

I rang the Whitchaf to make a reservation for 25 people for one night this month. A young inexperienced male answered the phone with a bad attitude asking for a deposit to book the room. I did not have my card at hand so rang back a short time later with my friends card. The same person then informed me that they don`t except credit cards over the phone for the booking. I may aswell book somewhere else as we need to book something quickly. I will now have to call in to pay if we still want to eat there.

i used to look forward to going to the deerplay taking my relations when they visited me but the customer service from the landlady was to be desired making their visit very unpleastant and unwelcome the food is fantastic especially for the money but it would be nice if they took payment by card i have been forced to go to other resturants because of the atmosphere. i hope the landlord reads this and realises how many customers are feeling the same and are being forced to dine else where.

 top pub
The British Queen has a overflowing sense of community with characters such as little Tommy and the landlord Rita who make you feel welcome from the moment you step in through the doors.

The pints are cheap, crisp and cheap too, guinness is 2.20 and fosters 1.99 , but the steal has to be John Smiths at 1.60 a pint or 80p a half.

If you ask nicely you can also go over the road to Marcos kebab house and eat it in the pub.

Up until 11 you have the convinience of the local supermarket if you ever need to buy any cigarettes.

Friendly staff, clean atmosphere, plenty of room, pool table with enough space, darts and live events. What more could you need? Come down to The British Queen today, I reccomend it!

Great food and chef - beware of the landlady!
The Deeplay has consistantly good food - and just as consistantly obnoxious landlady - on all of the last 3 visits over as many years.

Don't ask for a drink as she passes - she may be serving another table and will let you know it - Can't you see I'm busy!

After I ordered the food she said we don't take cards only cash - I checked my wallet and said your in luck to which she said No, your in luck!

I said it was unusual not to take cards - she said it wasn't as they had never taken cards (actually quite funny that one!)

Compliments again to her husband on the great food (I assume its her husband given she still has a job!)

 The Landlord
Being a frequent visitor, and having read the reviews on this site (posted now for several months), all i can say is, after many conversations with the owner he does not seem the type of gentleman that is easily aggrevated. However, when dealing with obnoxious people he will speak his mind. His management skills must be applauded, you only need to look at the awards (Most recent Lancashire Life Readers Choice - 2 years running) the restaurant has won! The popularity of this haven is shown when people are willing to wait up to an hour and over at weekends for the best meals in the north-west! I found a pint of Tomothy Taylor Lanlord, the surrondings and the friendly atmosphere helped pass the time. If you like good food, and a man who speaks his mind this is the place to visit!

Heavenly food and friendly, attentive staff
Great place to eat and drink in good friendly company. All the food is excellent, both the extensive 'standard' menu and the 'specials'. Haven't had a bad meal there yet! Excellent wine list to accompany the wonderful homemade food (no frozen chips or veg here). If you like good ale this place is a must with great guest beers. Owner and staff very friendly and chatty; genuinely interested in their customers' comfort and eager to make your visit enjoyable. Like whisky? You'll be spoilt for choice - huge selection; they must surely stock every conceivable kind. Can't wait to return.

 oldey worldey and quaint
.late 2005 the pub has new landlords and has recently won CAMRA'S east lancs pub of the year for 2003. Stone flag floors complement the natural ambience. With a extensive selection of wine, together with real ale it is nestled on a hillside just outside the town centre. Well worth a visit!

A fantastic place to take family and friends
All i can say is that the food is fantastic and lots of it, the staff are very friendly and attractive. I would recommend this place to anyone to go but if you dont like hustle and bustle dont go at peak times. It is in the middle of the country and lots of ramblers go for a hot lunch before going on there merry way. Ther has always been a warm and inviting atmosphere when i go and will keep going time and time again.

Myself & a friend have recently discovered the Fisherman's Retreat & keep returning for lunch there. The food is hearty & wonderful, is always served hot & aplenty, the staff are efficient, intelligent, polite & friendly, & the setting is rural & beautiful. We've always been treated very well there with the owner attuning to our needs e.g. putting more logs on the fire without us needing to ask when we we had come in from the cold. I'd return anytime.

A real gem set in a rural retreat. Quality home cooked food, even the best of food critics would find it hard to pin point a fault in this place. Extensive menu. A must.
